For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
Many will say Fall is the best season of the year, why? Because it brings new things, the leaves change from green to orange, even the aroma of the air changes from the smell of sandy beaches to roasting marshmallows and Pumpkin Spice. But why do seasons change and what can we learn from them?
All throughout this year we have seen many things change, some might even say we are living in a “new normal” but things change to make room for the new. In the book of Isaiah we are reminded, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:18-19a)”
God brings about change so that we further grow in Him. What we experience is never in vain, yet a call to further rely on Him. James 1:2-4 says, “consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
As we go about this season of change, we are promised that although the things around us change, God remains the same. He is, as Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “the same yesterday and today and forever.” When we experience changes in our lives, let us look to Him who never changes, as our constant living hope and our solid rock which we stand on.
Prayer for January
Father we thank you for the seasons you have allowed us to go through. May the things we go through ultimately bring you glory as we continue to lean on you in the good and in the difficult. Amen.
