When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
The words of The Beatles have been solidified in music history for decades. And yet this song has been a source of wisdom and comfort for many people who really don’t know where to turn when life has gone awry.
From the loss of a job, the loss of a loved one, sudden tragedies that change the trajectory of our lives. We as humans tend to look to a source that we think may be able to solve our situation or bring us some type of solace in the moment.
And yet the things that we look to for this, including within ourselves, are such fickle sources that leave us still with a void and not feeling satisfied with the answer. And the reason being because nothing on this earth can ever give us the comfort and guidance that we need in hour of need.
However, there is a Source that we can look towards that can do this and will continue to provide that comfort and guidance we need.
“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” Psalm 121:1-8 ESV
This Psalm tells us about who God is in being a refuge to us when we need it. In every circumstance, the eternal God of the universe who created all things, who does not sleep, who protects us from evil, comes to our rescue and lends us His aid and works for our good.
Remembering the attributes of who is God, in the midst of our circumstances, is what brings us comfort. Because we can bank on His promises that He will uphold us, that He will guard us, that He will keep us from evil and danger, that He will guide our paths in this life and into the next.
So the question that beckons to be answered is, who do you look to for hope and rescue in your circumstances? Are you looking to the eternal God who can do all these things? Or do you look to temporal things that can not fulfill your every need? This is a question we must all answer.
